Men’s Squad

Dec. 21 – Men beaten by Carris

The U-15s played their first indoor game on Sunday morning against Casa Pia Ladies and, in spite of the early hour and only one training session the day before, they looked like they had been playing together for six weeks, not six minutes. That was how long it took to get a penalty stroke, and captain Vicente put the first score on the board for the Casuals. It took him just one more minute to put a second goal in. Then one of the two talent discoveries of the day, Fleur Huijsmans, scored 2 more goals from open play and Vicente made it a hat-trick from a penalty corner to take a 5-0 lead into the interval.

After the break, Casa Pia came out fighting, but the second talent discovery of the day, Kim Huijsmans, Fleur’s older sister, took everything in her stride, stayed calm under pressure and played a very mature game at centre back. Vicente then got his fourth goal from another penalty corner and Marina rubbed salt in the wound with a nicely worked goal in the dying minutes, to close out a convincing 7-0 win. Watch out Lisbon Casuals Ladies!

After a tough defeat against Carris this morning, the Men played a second indoor game against Futebol Benfica this evening. Philip Wenzel put the Casuals ahead with a well-directed tip-in from a great through ball by Fred Santos. Futebol Benfica equalized from a defensive mix-up, but Casuals were holding their own. However only André Rosa’s save from a penalty stroke kept the scores level 1-1 at the break. In the second half Casuals’ play became more and more sloppy – perhaps tiredness from the morning game began to take its toll. Their mistakes were punished with regular goals from Futebol Benfica and left them with a 1-7 defeat.

Nov. 23 -Men draw against Juventude HC

After the U18s beat Casa Pia 5-1 yesterday, the Men had to come from behind twice today for a draw against Juventude. After falling behind to a high strike after 7 minutes, they went level 10 minutes later, when a fierce backhand cross from Philip Wenzel was neatly tucked away at the far post by João Ralha. A silly mix-up in the Casuals’ defence allowed Juventude to take the lead again 15 minutes into the second half.

With Fernando Custódio, Fred Santos and André Teixeira working tirelessly in midfield, Casuals gradually took control of the game. But, despite several inviting crosses flashing across the visitors’ goalmouth, Casuals’ finishing was simply not up to scratch.  After failing to take advantage of a host of penalty corners, Philip Wenzel finally drove one low inside the right-hand post for the equaliser. With Casuals wasting another clear-cut chance for a winner at the left-hand post in the final minutes, the game reflected some much improved team play, but a disappointment at the final 2-2 scoreline.
